I was reading what the word Milestone meant, because I had told someone recently that we were approaching 50,000 plays (that’s right plays NOT downloads) on Soundcloud and I thought the word Milestone would be fitting. The word means something along the lines of making a significant mark, change or development…some shit like that. The point is, one of the platforms that The Sly Show uses daily, has garnered 50,000 plays and has acquired 101 followers in less than a year.
How did this happen? Well that’s a really good question. On any given day, content can consist of DJ Mixes, Comedy Rants, Prank Calls and our signature ‘fuckery’. I remember being told by someone who knows a thing or two, that Soundcloud would be a good fit for us and of course I was hesitant. After putting a DJ Mix online and it being flagged due to ‘Copyright-infringement’ and our DJ Mixes getting pulled down, I quickly got mad and said “fuck this shit”, because it was becoming clear it would be more work than it was worth.
More and More people had talked about this Soundcloud thing. I saw rappers post there music on there, certain DJs would post there mixes even though they’d complain about the copyright issue, which was really one of the most annoying things about it. Basically, what Soundcloud does and still does (unless u know how to get around it), is they scan a DJ Mix or whatever and if that song is under a major record label they will deem you violating copyrights and remove it. That’s right, a DJ mix that’s blended, promoting the artist for free is considered violating copyright! Complete BULLSHIT, in our opinion!
As we spent more time on Soundcloud (we found our way back to the service), we learned how to get around that copyright bullshit. See here’s the thing, the record industry is hurting and there stupid copyright claims is just a way for them to say, “Hey you small person. You’re the reason why Gucci Mane doesn’t sell records so we gonna flag your DJ Mix”.
Over time, we got past that with some Sly Show Tricks. We started to bring in some really good numbers. The thing with Soundcloud is, they focus more on ‘plays’ then they do on ‘downloads’. Which at first, was kind of annoying, because our vision is to have people download/collect our content and save it for their personal use. However, whether it’s a play or a download, it doesn’t matter, because most of our audience listens from their mobile device, so their ‘plays’ are fine by us. It’s not that Soundcloud doesn’t offer a download, it’s just they don’t make it very noticeable. Their whole thing (besides being slaves/bitches to the recording industry) is to make sure there sexy flashy embeddable html 5 player is on blogs, sites, etc. and if sounds are being downloaded that probably wouldn’t happen. Which is fine, because their service has brought us 50,000 plays.
DJ Mixes, Rants, Shows, Segments, Sports themed content, all has been posted in the past year and 50,000 people have clicked play. It’s a time to celebrate for sure, we thank anyone who has clicked play. Soundcloud is only one of the platforms we use. We syndicate our content through many different platforms. But looking back on our few months, it’s been well worth it. I remember being in West Oakland and I heard someone in another car whom I didn’t know playing DJ Motive’s mix ‘Sharpie Eyebrows’ which is a collection of 90s freestyle dance music, I was like “wait a minute, that’s our shit!” I would like to credit Soundcloud for that because Soundcloud has a ridiculous amount of users. It enables us to get our content heard by people who probably would never have heard of us and for that, we are grateful. Recently another avid listener said he was at a gas station and he said someone was listening to our 2-20-14 Ratchet themed mix done by DJ Motive and again we credit Soundcloud for this. If I am being completely honest, we have interacted with all walks of life in the past year, all due to Soundcloud and there platform. Users have added our tracks to their profiles, favorited them and told there friends about us. Our content has always been quality and the Soundcloud community has been very vocal that, The Sly Show is what they love. It’s a great feeling for someone in bum-fuck Idaho ,saying they love our Dr. Dre Mix or a 50 year old grandma saying she listens to our Old School Segments. Soundcloud has done us well.
So we have seen our fair-share of rewards. Our content lives on through Soundcloud and every other platform we use. If not today, tomorrow or next week our content remains on these services for the very reason to consume, collect and enjoy. 101 fans, 350+ sounds and 50,000 plays later, I think all the work has paid off. Here’s to 50,000 plays on Soundcloud!
